Taboo 3 Reading at Wiscon

I’m not here right now. At the sound of the beep, I will probably be flying over the flyover states, only to stop and land in one of them: Wisconsin, where there will be Wisconnage. Wiscon is probably my favorite SFF convention, with its mix of Deep Social Issues conversation and sheer aesthetically-pleasing silliness: Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab perfume samples, the Dessert Salon’s gustatory glory, the chance to wear shiny things. I only hate that writing work has forced me to withdraw from the Concom; for a con as dynamic as this, I’m happy to roll up my sleeves and […]

Last Minute Promo is Last Minute

Gah! Been so obsessed with book 3 that I’ve missed a few things. Quick update: First, I’m going to be phone interviewed tonight, at the blog Other Worlds of Romance. You can tune in on BlogTalk Radio (see the widget on her site). Next! I’ll be at Wiscon starting on Thursday. I did mention that, at least. More! NYC-area folks, my writing group Altered Fluid will be the gala — which is New Yorkian for “last minute” — guests at the NYRSF reading this coming Tuesday. I and three of my AF peeps will be reading short pieces, so come

Wiscon 2010

For those of you who’ll be at Wiscon in a couple of weeks, here’s what I’m scheduled for: Friday: Writers’ Workshop (I’m leading a novel group!) Saturday: When to Speak Up, When to Let It Go; Sat, 10:00–11:15 am How do you balance political activism and relationships/work/life? When do you let things pass? When do you make allowances for people, or stop making allowances? How can you speak up without turning something into a fight? How do you protect your personal and emotional safety when you do activism? What words and phrases do you find particularly helpful? Let’s discuss and

Danvers Literary Festival tomorrow

For those of you in the Boston area, I’ll be in my old stomping grounds again briefly as part of the Danvers Literary Festival, all day at the Peabody Institute Library of Danvers. I’ll be on a fantasy panel with fellow New Yorker Leanna Renee Hieber, and an old buddy from the BRAWLers writing group (of which I was a member of while I lived in Boston), Margaret Ronald. (Paul Park was going to be there too, but cannot attend, alas.) We’ll be on a panel discussing all things fantasy. The whole event is free, so come on out!

The Romance Pitch

Wow. RT has been an Experience — all good, but a bit overwhelming. I’m not on any panels or anything; mostly I just wanted to get a better understanding of the romance genre. And man, was this the place to do it. Have been schmoozing with authors like Karen Miller and Linnea Sinclair, as well as familiar faces like Leanna Renee Hieber, Diana Rowland, and John Scalzi. Tomorrow is the big Book Fair, which has been described to me as “a full-contact book buying, author-signing squee-and-stompfest”, by an author who shall remain nameless on her request. I’m concerned that maybe

Books for NYC Schools reading this Saturday!

Local folks: I’ll be reading this Saturday at the Center for Fiction as part of the Books for NYC Schools event. This is basically a day that’s chock-full of writers and readings and incredibly cool events, as both big-name authors and n00bs like me come out to try and help kids in NYC schools get their greedy paws on cool free books. The price of admission is just two new or gently-used books, K-12 level. And speaking of big-name authors, I’ll be part of the sci-fi reading at 1:30 p.m. with Kurt Andersen and Rick Moody! Even if they did

I go you go HUGO (nom)! Also, reading.

More good news: “Non-Zero Probabilities”, my Clarkesworld story that’s already on the Final Ballot for the Nebula award, has also been nommed for the Hugo! There are no words to describe how stunned and thrilled I am by this. (Well, “stunned and thrilled” come close.) Seriously, ya’ll, this has been a banner year and it’s only April. While I’m posting, though, let me remind folks that I’m reading tomorrow night at Lady Jane’s Salon, the new romance-fiction series that’s been getting lots of attention in the New York reading scene. Had thought about reading one of the “hot parts” from

The Cascade Effect

Things haven’t really slowed down for me since Launch Week, which is a good thing, but the result of this has been that I’ve been a little slack on blogging. Sorry, folks! But here’s what’s going on this week, for example: The copyedit of book 2, The Broken Kingdoms, is due on Friday. But… …since I’m traveling to ICFA on Thursday, I actually need to get it done by then. Except… …since I have to work on Wednesday, and am doing a reading as part of the KGB Fantastic Fiction reading series that night, followed by our usual Chinese group

Mind Meld, Flights of Fantasy

A bit tired today; drove up to Albany yesterday to do a reading at the Flights of Fantasy bookstore. It went well, though there were several amusing moments — my cellphone going off in the middle of the reading was not one of them — like one of the store cats deciding to leap onto the table and inspect my book while I was reading. Also, for those who wonder, the woman with the toddler was a friend and I asked her to bring the baby; had been hoping to meet her at last. (And I desperately wanted to pick
