The Inheritance Trilogy That Could’ve Been*

Trilogy: A trilogy is a set of three works of art that are connected, and that can be seen either as a single work or as three individual works. Per Wikipedia, page last modified 23 October 2010 at 11:14. I note this because I’ve gotten some questions lately about my choice to make the Inheritance Trilogy three individual stories as opposed to the usual epic fantasy trilogy structure of a single story stretched over three books. First, a clarification: the Inheritance Trilogy is a single story. It’s just not the single story of any human character. Spoilers love you very […]

Missed the chat? Here ya go.

Busy makin’ vittles for Thanksgiving right now, thus my quietude these last few days, but I wanted to share this. If you missed the chat I did last Thursday night, you can go check out the transcript of it now. Visit the Knight Agency blog to download it. Some cool questions were asked, and I can only hope my answers were equally cool!

Monday Fantastic Monday; Carl Brandon Drawing ends!

Today has been a really good day. Can’t talk about why yet, alas, until things are official. But whoa, the coolness. Best Monday ever. I can’t wait to tell you. All that aside, though, there’s one good thing I can tell you about, or remind you about since I’ve already mentioned it here and on Twitter, etc.: the Carl Brandon Society’s raffle/drawing to raise money for the Octavia Butler Scholarship! The eReader you might be able to win is chock full of fantastic and skiffy fiction donated by authors and anthologies, including one story from me. Tickets are only a

A Pronunciation Guide for The Broken Kingdoms

As a commenter reminded me in the other pronunciation post, there are quite a few new names in The Broken Kingdoms, so I should do a list for this book too. Again, I don’t really care how these names are pronounced; they’re fictional characters, not real people who can get upset about it. But for those who really want to know, here goes. Oree Shoth: OH-ree SHOTH Easha, Wesha: EE-sha, WEE-sha Vuroy: voo-ROY Ohn: OH-hin (the “i” is very soft and brief) Ru: ROO Role: ROH-luh Maro/Maroneh: MAH-roh/mah-ROH-nay Nimaro: NEE-mah-roh Rimarn Dih: rih-MAH-rin (again, a brief “i” in that last

Nebula Nomming, Library Journaling

Busy today, so only a brief update! First, it’s Nebula time (again). Seeing as I actually made it to the final ballot last year, I figure I might as well try again this year, and let folks know what my recent stories are. I’ve had four stories published/soon to be published this year — an unusually productive year for me — but I think only two of them are eligible, though I’m going to ask the Neb folks if this is the case. The four stories are: “The Effluent Engine,” a novelette, which is due to come out in Steam

A Few Points of Clarification

…on some things I’ve been asked about, privately and in interviews, re the Inheritance Trilogy lately. I’m a big believer in the idea that a book’s text is fundamentally interactive. It means both what the author intended it to mean and what the reader interprets it to mean, with the actual value falling somewhere in between. The two cannot be separated, and a good author tries to anticipate what her readers will bring to the table. She can’t always succeed, of course; different readers bring different things. But she can try, so here’s what I was trying to do. Huge

What Fantasy Writers Do On Vacation

Apologies for not yet getting my London pics online; between Launch Week and life stuff I haven’t had time to edit and optimize. I’m not much of a picture taker, to be honest, and I tend to not do much with photos when I do take them. The visual fascinates me far less than the textual or auditory, for whatever reason. But I have two visual treats to share nevertheless: First, when I was in London, I did a signing of The Broken Kingdoms at the Forbidden Planet bookstore there, which is kind of like the sexily accented big brother

Election Catchup

Seeing as I was jetlagged and sleep deprived last week on Election Day — though I made it to the polls anyhow — I was in no mental condition to post any sort of postgame analysis then, nor for a few days afterward (especially given that it was Launch Week). Now that I’ve had time to recover and process a little — I have mixed feelings. On the local level, I’m very, very glad that Carl Paladino did not become New York’s next governor. The last thing this state needs right now is a rabid dog at the head of
