It’s official: Nebula Nom!

So I can finally let the cat out of the bag on some great news I got last week: The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms has been nominated for a 2010 Nebula Award!

I’m thrilled, of course — dancing in the streets, figuratively — but I’ve actually known about this since last week, so had some time to squee and calm down. It helps that I’ve been through this before; last year was my first time on the Nebula ballot, in the short story category. Didn’t win then, but I was OK with that because a) it really is an honor to be nominated, given that the Nebs are selected by my fellow SFF writers, and b) a story that I really liked won instead. Hard to feel bad when you’re competing against quality. I am again in excellent company this year, and will in fact have a harder time with the whole process because several of the other writers in the Novel category are actually friends, or people whose work I’ve read and admire. But as problems go, this is a good one to have.

So now we wait. Thanks to all of you who voted, and the rest of you — wish me luck.

  1. Oh go you! And if you don’t win, next year there’s The Broken Kingdoms to be nominated (which I think the better book of the two, but YMMV.)

  2. Congratulations! I’m halfway through the book, and I have a hard time putting it down to do other things (like work). Haven’t read such an awesome book in a long time.

    I’m rooting for you!

  3. MJJ,

Belated — actually The Broken Kingdoms was eligible this year, which was why I asked people to concentrate on the first book if they were going to nominate anything of mine. Otherwise the two books could’ve effectively split the vote. So I kind of assume that 100K is probably soaking up some of TBK’s love, too — the two books have formed like Voltron into a single nomination. Though honestly, without seeing the vote-count, there’s no way to know. (If I recall, they release the vote count after the awards are given, so we’ll be able to see then.)

For next year, I suppose The Kingdom of Gods will be eligible, but it seems a leeeeetle premature to think about that given that the book isn’t out yet. ;)

  4. Hi, congratulations on this wonderful news. I have just finished reading The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, and I loved it! When I saw the book in my local bookstore, I recognised your name from your blog so decided to pick it up. It’s a thought provoking book and it made me think a lot about the issues and themes in there. It was especially interesting trying to pick apart the themes, in light of the opinions that I recall reading on your blog before (“Is she saying this? Or that? No, wait I remember she said that before on her blog!”).

Anyway, I hope you win and I’ll definitely get The Broken Kingdoms. All the best!
