How an author feels upon receiving her page proofs

Please excuse my messy kitchen and crap film production skills.

Slightly intimidating. On the other hand, I love this stage of the book production process. I probably shouldn’t, because at this point I’ve read the novel what feels like ninety times… but I do. This is the point where that year of sweat and harsh language starts to feel like a book.

A really, really, really big, book.

Whew.

  1. Woohoo! Oh my gosh, I can only imagine how amazing opening that package must feel though. Yay you! Also, this means the rest of us are that much closer to getting to read it, so double yay! :)

  2. Lol. Love the music!

I cannot wait to receive such a package one day.

Congratulations! I know it’s going to be awesome. Can’t wait to read it. :)

  3. Some years ago I got picked up by a small publishing house, and I remember feeling like a kid at Christmas opening up the package with the proofs (the company went belly-up six months later, but such is life)

As part of the Pat Rothfuss Heifer Project campaign I received the first two copies of the Dreamblood series – Santa Crapola, why didn’t I ever find you before? (feel free to make any variation on ‘Well, Duh!’ you wish). I wanted to tell you two things: first, thank you so much for donating your books to Worldbuilders. I had the best Christmas: the satisfaction of donating several goats (or whatever) to people who need them, a nice tax write-off, and the chance to make up for lost time by picking up your earlier works (for the record, along with your two books I got a collector’s edition of a Spanish author, an Italian merchant prince board game, and a NASCAR racing game I took great delight in burning on Lexington Ave while the crowd danced naked around it) (really, it happened) SLAP (oww!, alright, I made that up. But it should’ve).

Second, anytime you’d like me to return the favor, I’ll happily send you a copy of anything I’ve written (I understand why you’ll turn the offer down, but I wanted to make it anyway) Thank you again for helping Worldbuilders…and I can’t wait to see what lurks between those pages.
    ~David

  4. David, thanks! I haven’t made the time to donate to Worldbuilders in the last few years; this is a reminder that I really should.
