A wonderful story. Something I've noticed in spy/action stories is that it's hard to get them to be both classy and fun at the same time, because classiness lends itself a bit too well to dryness, and fun lends itself a bit too well to schlock. But here, you pull it off brilliantly -- the best of both worlds. The flow of words, pacing, and characterization are all great and I LOVE how you've woven history and fiction together.

However, Jessaline's sleuthing is probably my favorite part of the story. I'm a sucker for well-written character thought processes.

I donated a while ago to Haitian Lawyers Leadership Network's "Nou La!" project for earthquake relief. They seem pretty trustworthy, especially given all the work they've done exposing unscrupulous NGOs.

[...] The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is the first volume of an epic fantasy series, The Inheritance Trilogy. The first three chapters are available online beginning here. Book two, The Broken Kingdoms, will be available in the fall, and N. K. is currently working on finishing book three. She’s also written several short stories, including the Hugo and Nebula nominated “Non-Zero Probabilities”, and a lesbian steampunk story, “The Effluent Engine”.
I love this story! Not being scientifically inclined myself, this had just the right amount for me to truly enjoy reading it. Jessaline and Eugenie are wonderful heroines. Thank you for writing such an entertaining and intriguing story with queer women of color in a steampunk setting. I couldn't have wished for anything better.

Oh, cool -- hadn't heard of this film. Though I'm going to have to brace myself, to watch it; if it's at all accurate, what was done to Toussaint (and his family) was horrific.
